Bishop Sydney James Kirby (known as ‘SJ’) was the first Missioner of the fledgling Bush Church Aid Society. He was a man of energy, pastoral experience and learning: he had taught at Moore College, and is commemorated in the Stockman’s Hall of Fame. Kirby gave himself to serve the people of the outback, taking initiatives such as the Flying Medical Service, the School of the Air, and employing women as well as men in ministry.
